Oldfogey, that was just wonderful! (This is second attemtp to contact you, hope both messages don't arrive, it will look like spam),

I have loved the Prelude Chorale and Fugue ever since I was in my teens and couldn't understand it. As a 41-yr old self-taught pianist I have finally started up with lessons and that is the piece I have insisted on. Its unity is tremendous, the way it manages to span Bach to late Mahler (even Prokofiev's Juliet is prefigured) makes it a piece outside normal time and normal explanations, one of the world's most gorgeous mysteries. It is an emotionally transfixing experience to hear it but wow it demands butch fingers!

I've been trawling the internet for commentary on it, but wiki, for example, is cursory (there isn't any mention of the Prelude, Aria and Finale, albeit a much inferior piece). Any leads?

This is my favorite Mozart song also. Rose sings it creditably compared to both the evil Kathleen Battle and Cecilia Bartoli. One wonderful thing about this version is that I can easily share it with friends. Thanks.

Thanks a million for making the wonderful Alex Welsh/Fred Hunt
"Davenport Blues" available......I first heard it courtesy of dear old Peter Clayton, in the days when the BBC`s Jazz Record Requests fitted neatly onto one side of a C90.......happy days.

Dear Old Fogey,

I am writing to you because you music has inspired me to challenge myself beyond conventional boundaries, or so I begin to fear and then I listen to your next pick, which usually means that I listen to your entire ipod while going about my very dull but necessary, torturous routine of no pain, no gain... drinks of clay and gross vomit on toast but the good news is that your music fills in between seeing those that keep me grounded.
So, thank you Old Fogey for being a part of this girls recovery by not only the choices you make but the very personal perspective you share.

Thank you for posting these remarks on Peggy Lee and this song.
I think I understand what you mean about the subtle but very real discernment in quality of tone real love encases... it is about being generous with those you love.
If only our country could wake up and see how the rest of the world sees us
"The Emperor's New Clothes"................
Perhaps you could post another song. You have one fan of your music willing to ask :-)
thank you for your thoughtfulness.

feeling a little blue with the majority
out in left field
waiting for a grand slam
dreaming again
and still believe in rainbows

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've tried to find out whether she did record Gerontius but I have been unable to find anything. Like her great predecessor, Kathleen Ferrier. She did some recordings of Mahler for Naxos - Kindertotenlieder - but not Das Lied von der Erde. A great pity too.

Many thanks for posting this extraordinary performance of this unique artist, a voice so totally and immediately recognisable, an unsurpassed legato and unparalleled breath-control. I had the honour of working often with Bernadette in the eighties and was very moved to hear this recording. I wonder if she ever recorded the Angel from dream of Gerontius. I cannot believe she is no longer with us, she always projected such a strong life-force. I miss her enormously

HawkPunk - There's something tough about her too, in that wiry voice. She knows she hasn't a chance with him, can't help her feelings, and mocks herself for it. Emotionally complex. A classic.

This is marvelous and so very sensual. Piaf's erotic longing, barren of melodic gilding, is simply heart rending. Thank you for this.
